Te Whai Oranga Pōneke – Open Space and Recreation Strategy

Consultation has concluded

Project update: At Wellington City Council’s Kōrau Mātinitini Social, Cultural and Economic Committee meeting on 28 June 2023, Mayor Tory Whanau and Councillors agreed to adopt Te Whai Oranga Pōneke, the Open Space and Recreation Strategy. Please see the Documents section for the final strategy and submissions summary.

About this project

Wellington’s public open spaces and recreational opportunities contribute a lot to our quality of life. We can’t take them for granted and need to think about their future.

We have reviewed the 2013 Our Capital Spaces Strategy and drafted Te Whai Oranga Pōneke – Open Space and Recreation Strategy. It will provide the overarching framework and strategic direction for the Council to manage its open space, and its recreation facilities, programmes and services over the next 30 years.

We heard from Wellingtonians about what they wanted for the future of open space and recreation, through the "What's your happy place?" engagement in early 2022. What we learned through this engagement is the foundation for the development of the mission, principles, focuses, and approaches proposed in this strategy.

The strategy focuses our open space and recreation planning, management, and investment towards the following five focus areas:

  1. Integrated
  2. Inclusive
  3. Regenerating and Resilient
  4. Re-indigenising
  5. Diverse
