Fairer rents for Council tenants (consultation postponed until further notice)

We have postponed public consultation on this proposal in response to Covid-19. Right now, this webpage gives you some information about the proposal and you can also ask questions.

We know many of our Council tenants are struggling to meet everyday needs and pay rent. That's why we are considering changing how we set rents for our tenants so it is fairer.

Right now, most tenants pay 30% less rent than they would if they rented their home from a private landlord. That takes no account of their household income.

We propose to set rent in a way that reflects tenants’ incomes. Many of our tenants will benefit, including those on the lowest incomes. They will have more money available to spend on food, clothing, heating and other essentials. Other social housing providers already charge income-based rents.

Is the net income before or after any eg Accomodation Supplement included?

    Beekay asked 2 months ago

    Kia ora,

    Thank you for your question.

You should include all household income for anyone over the age of 18 from wage/salary/benefits, including any Accommodation Supplement you currently receive. You do not have to include other special purpose payments (i.e. disability allowance, winter energy payment etc.).

Please note, If your rent changes, the Accommodation Supplement you receive from MSD may also change.

Public consultation on the proposed policy will start again in June. You can provide your feedback via online survey at https://www.letstalk.wellington.govt.nz/rent-setting

    Ngā mihi & best regards,

    Dan
