Miramar Minor Safety Works

Consultation has concluded

We are proposing line marking changes at the intersection of Townsend-Otaki and Athens Street.

These proposals include:

  • Adding a painted roundabout at the centre of the intersection where Townsend-Otaki and Athens Street meet.
  • Initially, the roundabout will only be painted on the road to observe traffic movement and allow the public to adapt to the new layout. After a thorough assessment, consideration will be given to installing more permanent structures.
  • Adding wide median markings at all the entrances of the intersection to separate the approach and departure lane. At the same time reducing the lane width to lower the approach speed.
  • Installing give way markings and signage at all of the intersection entrances.
  • Realigning the pedestrian crossing on Athens Street and installing a new pedestrian crossing on Otaki Street.
  • Adding broken yellow lines on both corners of Athens Street and Otaki Street to improve visibility and reduce congestion.

These changes have been proposed after receiving complaints and safety concerns from the public about the intersection. We have heard that many people have experienced near misses, or confusion while navigating the area.
