Latest update - December 2025

We've moved into the developed and detailed design stages of the project. This next phase will refine the concept plan and finalise design details for construction. The indicative timeframe for this work is from January - September 2026.

We have heard your feedback from earlier engagement, and this will be incorporated into the next stage of designs. We will be working directly with our local stakeholders throughout this next stage to ensure it aligns with community needs.

Background

Grenada North Park has long been identified as a key sport and recreation hub for Wellington's northern suburbs.

The park currently does not meet community or citywide demand due to poor drainage, uneven terrain, inconsistent field sizes, and limited usability in wet weather. The 2023 Nuku Ora Regional Sports Field Report highlighted a regional shortfall of 270 hours per week, with Wellington City facing the largest gap (364.4 hours/week). Frequent cancellations, inadequate pedestrian connections, unsafe vehicle access, limited parking, and a lack of casual recreation spaces further reduce usability. The park also lacks features that reflect cultural identity.

Given Wellington’s limited flat land and the need to support population growth, upgrading existing parks like Grenada North is essential. The project has been prioritised in the 2011 masterplan, funded through the 2018–28 and 2021–31 Long-term Plans, and continues to be a key initiative in the 2024–34 Long-term Plan, aligning with Council’s commitment to sustainable, connected, and accessible community infrastructure.

Progress to date

Throughout 2025, the Council undertook a detailed business case process to test the design options, understand the full project costs, and ensure the preferred option could be delivered within the available budget. This process led to refinements to the concept plan, including removing the extensive earthworks originally proposed to lower the upper terrace, while still meeting the core objectives of increasing field capacity, improving drainage, and enhancing community access.

At the same time, a building needs assessment was completed to identify what built facilities are required both now and in the long term. This assessment confirmed the need for amenities such as a toilet block to support the artificial turf and a maintenance shed and storage facilities. Immediate recommendations will be incorporated into the current project scope, with longer-term needs to be considered in future planning.

Concept plan

The goal is to create an attractive, functional and well-utilised sports and recreation park which caters for the growth in the northern suburbs and provides a multi-use park for the wider Wellington region.

Earlier in April 2025, we gathered feedback from the community to help inform the concept plan. This feedback shaped priorities for the park upgrades and is reflected in the updated scope. This includes:

  • New artificial sport field
  • Improved drainage
  • Entrance upgrades including car parking
  • Playground upgrade
  • Informal recreation opportunities
  • Landscaping, pathways and park furniture
  • Additional toilets and maintenance shed
