Consultation has concluded
We are upgrading Elizabeth Street, Mount Victoria and we want to hear your thoughts about the proposed upgrades.
Traffic Resolution consultation
The Traffic Resolution consultation for TR80-23 Elizabeth Street, Mount Victoria has now closed, thank you for giving your feedback. This resolution was only about the proposed resident and coupon parking changes, and the raised pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Austin Street not the tree removal.
You can find more details on the proposed traffic resolution on the right hand side of this page.

About the the Elizabeth Street upgrades
We want to future proof this area, so the space is safe and accessible for its residents and road users. Maintaining the current assets is increasing the costs for Wellingtonians, bringing more health and safety issues, and less accessibility for its users.
After a community meeting held on the Thursday 27 April, we have revised the changes and we are proposing;
- Remove 22 trees and replace with 22 new trees in tree pits. Trees to be preserved are one Olive tree, One Kowhai and two European Ash trees.
- Resurface the footpath
- Replace the kerbs
- Raise the intersection at Austin Street
The trees that will be removed are Fig, Olive, Japanese Camellia, Alder and Ash trees.
After collating the feedback received via the consultation process about replacement trees and balancing that with the needs of the infrastructure in the street we decided on the following trees for planting:
Large Tree – Ash
Medium Tree – Fruiting Olive
Small Tree - Michelia Yunnanensis
We explored the planting of native trees, but we found them to be unsuited for the specific street as they are mostly evergreen and will cast plenty of shade over houses in the winter, which is not ideal.
The dedicated tree pits would mean the roots would be confined and would not cause the same problems with tearing up footpaths in future.
Prior to the community meeting and our initial design proposal we would have had to remove a total of 21 coupon car parks. After receiving feedback from residents regarding existing parking constraints, as well as parking surveys being undertaken, we have managed to reduce the number of car parks being lost to one car park.
