Latest update

Thank you for your patience as we worked towards a final design for the Duncan Park play area, based on the predominant themes that came through public consultation. Option 2 was the preferred design and so that is the design that we will be building.

We had a total of 134 submitters, with the following results:

  • 60 submissions or 44.8 % supporting option 1.
  • 64 submissions or 47.8 % supported option 2.
  • 10 submissions or 7.4 % did not register a preferred design, and a subset of this were 3 submissions or 2.2% did not support the renewal due to cost considerations.

Click on the tabs to read more about the results of the survey and how this has impacted the final design.

To clarify:

  • The long metal embankment slide is staying.
  • A public toilet and fountain by the community centre is currently being installed, and this will be in place prior to the play area renewal.

Construction is planned for late summer, going into early autumn.

We have then tried to accommodate additional requests where we can, these include:

  • Taking into consideration the narrow margin between designs and reflecting on the current play provision when compared to the proposed concepts, we have added a spatial net to the preferred design.
  • Adding an updated pendulum swing (spinning seesaw carousel), which was a popular item requested.
  • Adding climbing grips to the Overhead Grab Bar module.
  • Adding stairs to the junior slide unit.
  • Adding a sensory cog panel unit.
  • We will be looking to add some deciduous trees for shade over the warmer months.

There were some requests that we were not able to accommodate, largely to do with budget constraints, the layout of the site, and trade-offs with other equipment.

Examples include:

  • Adding a BBQ
  • Adding a dual flying fox
  • Adding a basketball facility
  • Adding water play
  • Adding adult calisthenics equipment

About this project

The Duncan Park Play Area is due for an upgrade.

Two design options were developed which we invited the community to provide feedback on in June-July 2025.

More information

Duncan Park play area is a neighbourhood play area that is a handy place for a quick play. Typically, there will be play opportunities for at least one age group (ideally junior children as a minimum).  It is designed to service the local neighbourhood within approximately 600-metre walking distance and is likely to be located in neighbourhood parks.

We're renewing these play areas to make them an even better place to play. You can read more about Wellington City Council’s strategic vision and planning for play areas in Wellington in the Play Spaces Policy (2017).
