Wellington City Council is proposing to classify or reclassify 21 areas of coastal reserve land under the Reserves Act 1977.

About reserve classifications

All Council land which is held as a reserve under the Reserves Act 1977 (the Act) must be classified according to its primary purpose.

These classifications help to guide the use, management, and development of reserves to align with this purpose. Classifications can limit how the land can be used and the types of activities that can and cannot occur on the land.

The other classifications in the Act (nature reserve, scientific reserve, government purpose reserve) are not relevant to this consultation.

About the consultation

During the development of Tātou ki Uta - our draft Coastal Reserves Management Plan, we reviewed the land status of the coastal reserve areas managed by the Council.

Through this process we identified areas of coastal reserve land which are yet to be classified, and others that we recommend for reclassification to reflect changes to their primary purpose. There are 21 proposed classifications or reclassifications.

Please read the consultation document for comprehensive information on these proposals.
