Our Waste Options: Exploring future disposal options for Wellington

The existing consents for Wellington’s Southern Landfill expire in April 2026, and we have now reached a critical point where we must decide on how we dispose of the city’s waste after this date.

What's happened so far

On 14 October 2021, the Infrastructure Committee met to discuss next steps for residual waste disposal options and the strategic waste review.

The Council has confirmed it will consider residual waste options and the strategic waste review roadmap together, to ensure a joined-up approach.

Next steps

Council officers are currently preparing legal advice around consultation options. This information will be presented to the Wellington City Mayor and Councillors for consideration in early 2022.
