1. Where can I plant a tree in memory of my loved one or for other significant events under the new policy?

The Council encourages commemorative planting to be undertaken as part of the organised and scheduled planting programme in designated areas. This will generally take place in restoration planting sites as part of the Council’s revegetation programme.

Guidance will be developed and published on our website to provide more specific information on commemorative planting, such as planting time, location and types of trees.

    2. How will the 20-year term for commemorative furniture be applied retrospectively to my existing furniture?

The 20-year term for commemorative furniture has been proposed in accordance with the Policy guiding principles.

To be fair and consistent, the 20-year term will commence for all existing commemorative furniture at the adoption date of the revised Policy. This means that for existing furniture, the 20-year term will start from the Policy commencement date and not the date the furniture was installed.

However, for any new commemorative furniture installed after the Policy has been adopted, the commencement of the 20-year term begins at the installation date of the furniture.

An application for renewing the term will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

    3. Can I still scatter ashes in Wellington under the new Policy?

Ash scattering will no longer be covered under the new Policy.  However, you can make a request to the Council’s Cemeteries Team and get approval to conduct ash scattering at designated areas under the Cemeteries Management Plan Tawa, Karori and Mākara Cemeteries 2021

Currently, Karori Cemetery has designated areas for ash scattering.
