Notice of Requirement – Moa Point Sludge Minimisation Facility

Consultation has concluded

About this project

In the 2021 Long-term Plan, we agreed to invest in alternate sewage sludge disposal technologies to break the link between the landfill and sewage.

The new facility will reduce volumes of sludge being disposed of at the Southern Landfill by more than 80%. This will enable Wellington to get on with reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and the associated greenhouse gas emissions.

A preferred option - a thermal hydrolysis, digestion and thermal drying plant located at Moa Point - has been identified. The business case for this option was approved in June 2022.

What the Notice of Requirement covers

The alteration to the Designation (Notice of Requirement) will provide for the design and build of the new facility, any activities that happen during construction and operation, and for ongoing use and maintenance of the facility.

Regional consents are also required from Greater Wellington Regional Council which, at this stage, are not part of this public process.

Consultation has concluded
  • Will the Miramar community be consulted about mitigating the effects(on them) from the initial construction and then the operation of the new Moa Point Sludge Minimalisation Facility?.

Margie asked over 1 year ago

Thanks for the pātai! We are keen to work with all communities on managing any impacts on them.  We would encourage you to attend the webinar or drop-in meeting to hear more about the project and talk to the project team about your concerns.  We would also encourage you to submit on the Notice of Requirement to ensure your suggestions are formally recorded as part of the submission process. • IS THERE ANY SMELL THERE IS TO MUCH ALREADY AFTER GUARANTEE OF NO SMELL BEFORE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE WAS BUILT

DADADAD asked over 1 year ago

Kia ora! The new sludge minimisation facility is quite different to a normal wastewater treatment plant because the sludge is kept within closed tanks and process plant. The plant is then placed inside a building, and the air from both the plant and the building is treated through a new odour treatment system. Our early consultation with the local community identified that one of the current issues is that odours are emitted from the inlet pump station when the doors are open for maintenance of the pumps. To address this, the inlet pump station will be enclosed in the new building as part of the sludge minimisation project. Ngā mihi, Abi

  • What date is the webinar?

Abi@WCC asked over 1 year ago
